The CV
When I was younger I asked someone what I could possibly do for a job since I was disabled. She suggested that I could work in a factory peeling egg shells. I wasn’t content with this and knew I could do so much more.
The BBC
Now, some years later I’m a Project Manager at the BBC in London working on some of the most innovative developments in New Media. The BBC is a great place to work since they really have looked after my needs (i.e. providing a light weight laptop, parking space etc.) and my colleagues are very accommodating. I work in White City and there’s a great buzz around the Television Centre having seen a few well known faces.
The Worlds Largest Civil IT Programme – Cerner
Prior to the BBC I was an Engagement Leader for Cerner in London, which provides software to the NHS in the worlds largest civil IT programme (the National Programme for IT). I started as an Engagement Controller and then had a rapid promotion.
Go on. Be a Tiger! – Accenture
I worked as a Consultant for Accenture in the City for clients in the Communications and High Tech industry. I worked on Business System Integration, Strategy and Human Performance projects. I worked with BT, AOL, Cable and Wireless, Carphone Warehouse, Energis, Microsoft and Vodafone.
Flying High – British Airways
Prior to working for Accenture I took a Gap Year from University to work for British Airways as an Account Executive. This was my first taste of a proper job – having secured an Internship with BA I knew I was on the flight-path (excuse the pun) for a great career.
Right at the Beginning – LloydsTSB
This isn’t where my work experience stops! Work has always been important to me – a way of proving to others that despite having a disability it is possible to partake in ‘normal’ life.
When I was 16 I went to my local bank and asked to speak with the Manager – not for a loan – I wanted a summer job. We had an informal interview and then he offered me a summer placement at the main branch, which continued for 3 years through my college holidays. This was a milestone in my professional life – I met a senior executive who trusted me and knew I was capable of performing. I began by working in the back office processing business transactions and then they asked me to work on the front-line as a Customer Service Advisor.
